PIOPPE DI SALVARO (LA BOTTE)

On September the 29th started a raid affecting all the houses, farmers houses, and hamlets in the region of the 3 adjoining communes Marzabotto, Grizzana – Morandi and Monzuno.

The men, which were separated from woman and children, were brought to the stable of Pioppe on a little square on the opposite side of the church. In the morning of 30th September the SS selected those which were in shape to work and which not. Those who were perceived as incapable to work, were kept imprisoned and on the following day, Sunday, 1st October shot at the “Botte” of Pioppe. All the others were locked in the church and later deported to Germany in a working camp. “Botte” is the name for a big water filled pothole, which was used for works at a hemp factory. In those days, this pothole was empty because the factory has been bombed just before. 45 people fell on the muddy ground after they were shot. 3 could flee, but died soon after. (Comelli Luigi, Nannetti Guido and a man from Carviano). 3 people survived. (Ansaloni Aldo, Borgia Pio e Piretti Gioacchino, named Domenico). As later on the locks of the pothole opened and water entered in, it flushed all the corpses into the river “Reno”. Nobody of them has ever been found.
